NJ/NY Gotham FC Earns Point at Home Against Chicago in First Test Under New Management
Veteran midfielder Allie Long makes her 150th NWSL regular season appearance

HARRISON, N.J. (September 4, 2021) – NJ/NY Gotham FC remained at Red Bull Arena for a second week to face off against the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday night. The match was presented to Gotham FC fans by NJM. In the team’s first outing since the hiring of Scott Parkinson and Beverly Goebel Yanez, Gotham FC played to a scoreless draw with each team settling for a point. With the result, Gotham FC remains in seventh place in the league table with 22 points behind the Washington Spirit.

The Chicago Red Stars got out on the front foot and tested Gotham FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan early including a Casey Krueger shot that hit the far post in the 3rd minute. Despite being out possessed in both halves, Chicago made the better of their opportunities getting five shots on frame and holding Gotham FC to none. Sheridan turned in a big performance behind five critical saves earning her Budweiser Player of the Match honors.

Veteran midfielder Allie Long made her 150th NWSL regular season appearance in this match making her one of just six players to reach this milestone in NWSL history. She joins the elite company of Lauren “Lu” Barnes, teammate McCall Zerboni, Merritt Matthias, Christine Nairn, and Tori Huster. Acquired in a trade with the OL Reign in April, Long has appeared in every match for Gotham FC and scored one goal.

Gotham FC Acting Head Coach Becki Tweed on the match:

“I think we knew it was going to be a fight going into it and we had to compete. Obviously it’s something that happens every game. We just had to get our foot on the ball and possess. They pressed us really high and we had to try to solve that, but a clean sheet which is something we’re really happy about and something that we’re striving for. Now we can reset and use these next couple of weeks to really build into getting back to three points again.”

Following Saturday’s match, Gotham FC enters a three week break and will not play again until Saturday, September 25 against the North Carolina Courage at Red Bull Arena. Gotham FC’s match originally scheduled for next week against Kansas City at Legends Field was rescheduled to Friday, October 22 at 8:00 p.m. ET due to a venue conflict. Single and group tickets are on sale and pricing details can be found here.
