Jaedyn Shaw again added her name to the Gotham FC record books with her 10th goal of the season to help the hosts clinch at least one home playoff match at Sports Illustrated Stadium with a 1-1 draw against the visiting Angel City FC on a rainy Sunday.
Shaw, who scored the opening goal of a match for the eighth time this year, became the third player in club history to reach double-digit goals in a season. But Angel City’s late equalizer forced a share of the points in front of Gotham FC’s fourth-largest regular season home crowd.
“The performance of the team overall, when you look at most of the actions of the game, it's something to be proud of,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós. “Conditions weren't easy, the pitch wasn't the best, and still the team really dominated the game, applied the game plan. Individual performances were really good from people stepping into the team, like Mandy (Freeman) and (Midge Purce) changing positions. We controlled the game really well. We scored a fantastic goal. But the part that we are not happy about was to concede that chance, concede that goal. And when we haven't punished teams enough, which we should have, then we go home with one point.”
Gotham FC (16-4-7, 55 points) cushioned its lead atop the NWSL standings, moving four points ahead of second-place San Diego Wave with three games remaining. The next match weekend – Oct. 16-18 – will play a major role in determining the race for the NWSL Shield, given to the league’s top team in the regular season.
On Sunday, the point pushed Gotham FC 11 points clear of fifth-place Kansas City Current and maintained its 12-point edge on sixth-place Angel City. That’s enough to confirm Gotham FC’s home quarterfinal match and pushed Amorós’s team to the brink of confirming a top-two seed in the NWSL Playoffs, presented by Google Pixel.
Shaw found the breakthrough in the 66th minute, capping a lovely move through Midge Purce and Rose Lavelle down the right flank. Purce played a diagonal pass into the penalty area, and Lavelle dragged a low cross toward the penalty spot. Shaw arrived right on time, blasting in a left-footed finish from eight yards out.
Lavelle has an assist in three consecutive matches, while Shaw has five goals and three assists in her last six home games.
Angel CIty netted the game-tying goal in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, with Taylor Suarez redirecting a low pass from Emily Sams inside the near post.
Gotham FC will now pause for the FIFA international window before returning to action Oct. 17 at rival Washington Spirit at Audi Field. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET, with CBS carrying the national broadcast.
