HARRISON, NJ (Wednesday, September 20, 2023) – NJ/NY Gotham FC today announced that Icelandic forward Svava Guðmundsdóttir has been loaned to SL Benfica through Jan. 31, 2024. The loan marks the first transaction between the two clubs since announcing their partnership in May.
“Whilst my time at Gotham has come to a close for now, I want to send a message to say thank you to all the Gotham fans and everyone at the club,” said Guðmundsdóttir. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to play in the NWSL and represent the badge. I wish you all the very best of luck going forward and I’ll be cheering you on from Europe. As I look ahead to my next chapter, I’m excited to start my journey at Benfica. I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates and helping the team on the pitch.”
Guðmundsdóttir earned seven appearances for Gotham FC, including four starts during the 2023 NWSL campaign. In regular season play, the forward started on April 1 against OL Reign and at home on July 2 against Angel City FC. In UKG NWSL Challenge Cup action, Guðmundsdóttir earned two starts, with one on April 19 against the Washington Spirit and another on May 3 against the North Carolina Courage. Her two shot attempts both came in Challenge Cup competition.
“We sincerely value the contributions that Svava Guðmundsdóttir has brought to the club, and we are pleased to be able to assist with her continued opportunities in the game,” said Gotham FC General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West.
Prior to joining Gotham FC, Guðmundsdóttir scored six goals in 22 games last season with SK Brann in Norway’s top flight, the Toppserien, as her club finished first in the standings and qualified for the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The 5-7 forward has played for the Icelandic Women’s National Team since 2017 and has scored two goals in 36 appearances.
