Recap: Gotham FC Extends Unbeaten Run with 1-0 Home Win Over San Diego

Jaedyn Shaw’s curled-in effort in the 44th minute stood as the game-winning goal in Gotham FC’s 1-0 win over the San Diego Wave FC on a stormy Friday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

It was an important and welcome win for Gotham FC, which played in its home stadium for the first time in more than two months and extended its unbeaten stretch to seven games. The victory served as a six-pointer, a cushion-building win against one of Gotham FC’s top challengers for the NWSL Shield.

“It was about being more aggressive,” said acting Gotham FC head coach Shaun Harris. “We talked after the last game about recognizing certain areas and being more aggressive, more on the front foot and higher up the pitch. … That was one of the biggest things we spoke about – getting in their faces and making it really difficult for them to play their game. Enforcing that mentality made a big impression from the start. There were return chances and we probably should have taken one and killed the game, but people are getting a lot better and the team's in a really good place.”

Gotham FC (12-3-4, 40 points) moved four points clear of its archrival, the Washington Spirit, atop the NWSL standings, with Washington set for a Saturday tilt against the in-form North Carolina Courage. The shutout was Gotham FC’s 12th of the 19-game season, with Harris’s team holding its opponents scoreless for the last 358 minutes of game time.

Shaw found the breakthrough just before halftime, swerving her shot around two defenders before it shorthopped past San Diego goalkeeper Sandra Paños, who saw the shot late. The 21-year-old scored her second goal against her former club since joining Gotham FC, this being the first on home soil.

Jordynn Dudley, Shaw’s fellow 21-year-old, provided the assist, her third of a stellar rookie campaign and the perfect illustration of her strong performance. She led the team with four chances created and three successful dribbles, winning two fouls.

Gotham FC’s defense did the rest, holding San Diego without a shot for more than a half-hour as the Wave chased the game deep into the second half. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made three saves in her return to action after resting through the past two games, including a sprawling stop on Trinity Byars’s one-on-one opportunity midway through the first half.

Winners of three in a row and six of the past seven – with the seventh being a draw – Gotham FC has now won 1-0 seven times this season.

Gotham FC remains at Sports Illustrated Stadium for another Friday night contest, welcoming the fifth-place Kansas City Current on Aug. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, with Prime Video once again carrying the national broadcast.
