Recap: Gotham FC, Portland Battle to Draw in Much-Anticipated Rematch

Jaedyn Shaw scored her sixth goal of the season but Portland converted a penalty 15 minutes later to draw Gotham FC 1-1 on a gorgeous Friday evening at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

The tie helped Gotham FC set a new club record for an unbeaten run, extending it to 10 games. The first-place team hasn’t lost since July 4, building a seven-point lead atop the NWSL standings.

“There's a lot of frustration across the group and across the team, and we know we need to be better,” said Gotham FC acting head coach Shaun Harris.

“In the first half we had a lot of the ball, but we just lacked that little bit of urgency in and around the box and the opposition half. We tried to tweak it at halftime, try to go a bit aggressive with the subs. We had some really good chances. It just wasn't enough. When you're one-up, you're always giving a team the chance to get back in. That's what happened today.”

Gotham FC (13-3-6, 45 points) now owns the most points from home matches in the league, with 25. The two-game series between Gotham and Portland ended with two draws.

On Friday night, a cagey first half gave way to an open second half, with both teams yielding a handful of prime scoring opportunities.

It took an unexpected moment from Shaw to break through in the 60th minute. The 21-year-old Texan admitted she intended to deliver a right-footed cross into the box roughly 35 yards from goal, but the initial swerve left came back to the right, catching Portland goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold off her line and finding the back of the net.

Opta assessed Shaw’s chance of scoring at a 0.01 expected goal.

“I don't think it's a secret: Based on my reaction to the goal, I was trying to cross it,” Shaw said. “I'm really happy it went in the goal.”

Portland forward Sophia Wilson equalized in the 75th minute, slotting home a penalty won by winger Pietra Tordin at the top of Gotham’s box.

The result kept the standings as they were coming into the weekend, with now third-place Washington playing Bay FC on Sunday with a chance to move back within five points of Gotham FC.

For Gotham FC, September is a heavy travel month, starting with a three-match road stretch and the club’s first trip to face Denver Summit FC in Colorado next Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET, with CBS carrying the national broadcast.
