Williams to remain with the New Jersey/New York-based club through the 2025 NWSL season

HARRISON, NJ (June 20, 2023) NJ/NY Gotham FC today announced at the Empire State Building that U.S. Women’s National Team forward, Olympic medalist, three-time National Women’s Soccer League champion, and former league MVP Lynn Williams has signed a new three-year contract to remain with the club through 2025.

“Gotham FC has quickly become my home, and I’m honored to be part of the club’s long-term vision,” said Williams. “This is a special team with talented players and a supportive coaching staff that has allowed me to thrive. I cannot wait to see what we can accomplish together over these next few years.”

Since joining Gotham FC from the Kansas City Current via NWSL Draft-day trade on Jan. 12, 2023, Williams has scored six goals in 12 regular season games, including a team-leading four game winners, and both of the team's goals in the NWSL Challenge Cup so far. She has been honored among the NWSL’s Best XI in back-to-back months, and she was named Budweiser NWSL Player of the Week on three separate occasions during an impressive comeback campaign in her return from last year’s season-ending hamstring injury.

“Lynn Williams is an incredibly talented player who has been a key contributor to the overall success of the team this season,” said Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amoros. “She plays any role that is needed at the time, whether that means scoring goals, tracking back on defense, or being a positive voice in the locker room. She represents the values that we have as a club, and is an example for our younger players."

The three-time NWSL champion (2016, 2018, 2019), Golden Boot winner (2016), and former MVP (2016) continues to add to an already illustrious, nine-year NWSL career, becoming the league’s all-time career leader in game winning goals (19) and the only player in league history to surpass combined goal contributions of 60 career goals (63) and 25 career assists (26). Williams ranks second on the all-time leading scorer list as well as for most career goals in all competitions (74), ties for second-most games with two or more goals (10), and remains one of only two players with 60-plus goals (63) and 10,000 minutes played (10,798).

“During the offseason, we placed a strong emphasis on moving in a bold new direction to build a roster that could be competitive both in the 2023 season and well into the future,” said General Manager Yael Averbuch West. “Acquiring Lynn Williams and extending a player of her caliber for three years provides tremendous stability and anchors us for success in years to come.”

On the international stage, Williams helped Team USA to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and has made 52 appearances for the U.S. Women’s National Team while scoring 15 goals. She is also a five-time SheBelieves Cup Champion (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) and among the pool of hopefuls for potential selection to the U.S. Women’s National Team roster this summer’s for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

A California native, Williams set a Pepperdine school record for shots (130) and ranked first in the West Coast Conference (WCC) during her collegiate career.
