HARRISON, NJ (November 7, 2023) – The accolades continue for NJ/NY Gotham FC, as the National Women’s Soccer League today announced that Gotham FC Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós has been named the 2023 NWSL Coach of the Year.
In his first season as Gotham FC Head Coach, Amorós led the club to its largest point gain from one season to the next (18 points) and from the bottom of the table to playing in the NWSL Championship on Saturday, Nov. 11 (8 p.m. ET, CBS).
With the semifinal win over defending champions Portland Thorns, Amorós continues to lead the club on a historic run. In the quarterfinals, Amorós helped the club to secure its first playoff win in NWSL history and third playoff berth all-time. In addition, Gotham FC became the first No. 6 seed to win a playoff game, with a 2-0 victory over No. 3 North Carolina Courage on Sunday, Oct. 22.
Under Amorós’ leadership, two Gotham FC players were also named finalists for this year’s NWSL Awards for their stellar performance – captain Ali Krieger for Defender of the Year and defender Jenna Nighswonger for Rookie of the Year, presented by Ally. Additionally, Krieger, Nighswonger, and forward Lynn Williams also earned Best XI awards, presented by Mastercard.
Amorós was named Gotham FC Head Coach in November 2022. Before joining Gotham FC, he led the Houston Dash to a playoff appearance as interim head coach in 2022.
The list of finalists was decided after a preliminary round of voting by owners, general managers, coaches, players, and media. The finalists were then voted on by fans, owners, general managers, coaches, players, and media.
