2025 (Gotham FC): Anchored one of the league’s top defenses, conceding just 25 goals in 26 matches, second only to the Kansas City Current. Appeared and started in all 26 regular-season games, tying the club single-season appearance record and setting a new mark for starts while leading the backline to a club-record 11 clean sheets. Held Seattle Reign FC to one shot in a match, a new club record for fewest shots faced. Ranked third in the NWSL in passes (1,520), second in successful passes (1,359), fifth in possession won in the defensive third (71) and seventh in touches (1,775). Appeared and started in her fifth NWSL Championship, tying league records, and extended her all-time playoff leads in games played (17), games started (17) and minutes (1,679). Appeared in a final for her fourth different club and earned a league title with her third.
2024 (Gotham FC): Led the team with a career-high 90.3% passing accuracy and 2,158 minutes played. One of two players to start 25 games, setting new career highs in both appearances and starts.
2023 (OL Reign): Started 19 matches, logged 1,677 minutes and recorded an 80% successful pass rate. Helped the team reach the 2023 NWSL Final, playing every minute of every playoff match.
2022 (Washington Spirit): Appeared in 10 matches (nine starts) before suffering an injury while on international duty and being placed on the season-ending injury list.
2021 (Washington Spirit): Started 14 of her 15 matches for 1,263 minutes and started all three playoff games, helping the Spirit win the NWSL Championship.
2019 (Portland Thorns): Named to the NWSL Second XI. Appeared in 13 matches, making 12 starts and scoring two goals.
2018 (Portland Thorns): Started all 20 regular-season matches and earned NWSL Best XI honors. Logged 3,420 consecutive minutes across 38 matches from Aug. 27, 2016 to May 19, 2018.
2017 (Portland Thorns): One of four players to start all 24 matches, playing every minute (2,160) and recording three goals and one assist. Delivered the game-winning assist in the NWSL Championship against the North Carolina Courage and scored her second career NWSL playoff goal.
2016 (Portland Thorns): Selected first overall in the 2016 NWSL Draft. Started and played 90 minutes in all 15 appearances, scoring her first professional goal in the semifinal round of the NWSL Playoffs against the Western New York Flash.
From 2012 to 2015, Sonnett was a cornerstone of Virginia’s back line, starting 89 of her 97 appearances and helping the Cavaliers reach two College Cups while contributing 11 goals and nine assists. She earned three All-ACC honors during her career and set a UVA single-season record with 2,341 minutes played as a sophomore in 2013. As a junior in 2014, she was named the College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player, and as a senior in 2015 she capped her collegiate career as the espnW National Player of the Year while earning First Team NSCAA All-America, First Team NSCAA All-Southeast Region and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Sonnett received her first senior call-up to the U.S. Women’s National Team on Oct. 16, 2015, after five years with the U-18 and U-23 programs, and went on to help the United States win the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as part of the 23-player roster. She earned an Olympic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, appearing on the 18-player roster, and started two of three matches in the USA’s Concacaf W Championship title run in 2022. In 2023, she appeared twice at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, making one start, and in 2024 she was selected to the 18-player Olympic roster, appearing as a substitute in the gold medal match to help the team secure a clean sheet and the title. She earned her 100th cap on Oct. 24, 2024, against Iceland, and in 2025 was named to the 23-player roster for the SheBelieves Cup.
