Gotham FC Caps Three-Match Road Trip with Victory Over Houston

Sam Kerr scored the game-winner and Shelby Hogan made six critical saves on a steamy Saturday night in Houston, helping Gotham FC past the Houston Dash 1-0 at Shell Energy Stadium.

The win pushed Gotham FC (11-3-4, 37 points) into first place atop the NWSL table and finished a 10-day, three-game road trip with seven points – two wins and a draw – for the reigning NWSL champions. It was Gotham FC’s league-leading 11th shutout of the campaign.

“It was a really difficult game, and we knew it was gonna be difficult,” Gotham FC acting head coach Shaun Harris said. “We mentioned, ‘Just take your time, be calm, be patient – it will come.’ Defensively we were a lot more solid. We managed to reduce the transitions for the most part, which we're really happy about. We focus on that. And, at the end of the day, we got the job done.”

In Houston, Gotham FC controlled proceedings from start to finish, but it took a moment of magic from Kerr and former Chelsea teammate Guro Reiten to create the breakthrough in 90-plus-degree heat.

Kerr, who missed a penalty in the first half, redeemed herself with an exceptional reach-and-redirect on Reiten’s whistled-in cross, sending a low shot past the outstretched arms of Houston Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell. It was a delightful goal, Kerr’s second on the road trip. The assist was Reiten’s fourth, making her the team leader in that category.

On the other end, it was Hogan who stood tall, registering her third clean sheet of the season and second consecutive in place of regular starting goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Hogan’s sprawling stop of Sarah Puntigam’s long-range effort in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time stood out as the save of the game. Her equally impressive fingertip redirect of Houston Dash rookie Kat Rader’s effort from the edge of the area pushed the ball into the woodwork, denying the hosts an early goal.

“I’m super grateful to have the confidence of the group and the confidence of the coaching staff,” Hogan told the NWSL+ broadcast after the match, “so when I step in, I just know I need to execute my role to the best of my ability. That’s what I tried to do tonight.”
