Gotham FC Faces Rival Washington Spirit With NWSL Shield in Reach

WASHINGTON (Oct. 16, 2026) – Gotham FC returns from the FIFA international window Saturday with a rivalry matchup against the Washington Spirit at Audi Field and an opportunity to take another major step toward the first NWSL Shield in club history.

Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET Saturday, with CBS carrying the national broadcast.

Gotham FC (16-4-7, 55 points) enters the weekend with a four-point lead over second-place San Diego Wave in the race for the NWSL Shield, which is given to the league’s regular season champion, with three matches remaining. A win against Washington would guarantee Gotham FC a top-two finish and home-field advantage through the NWSL Playoff semifinals.

Gotham FC could also clinch the first NWSL Shield in club history Saturday with a win combined with a San Diego loss later in the day against the North Carolina Courage.

Gotham FC enters the match unbeaten in its last four following a 1-1 draw against Angel City FC on Oct. 4 at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Jaedyn Shaw scored her 10th goal of the season to become the third player in club history to reach double-digit goals in a regular season, while Rose Lavelle recorded an assist for a third consecutive match. Gotham FC has lost just once since July 4.

Washington (15-8-4, 49 points) sits third in the NWSL standings following a 3-2 road victory over the Houston Dash on Oct. 4. Tara Rudd, Sofia Cantore and Clara Luvanga each scored for the Spirit, with Luvanga delivering the game-winner in the 84th minute. Washington returns to Audi Field having lost three of its last four home matches, scoring just once across those four games.

Saturday marks the 46th meeting between Gotham FC and Washington across all competitions, with Gotham FC holding a 16-17-12 record in the rivalry. The clubs last met July 15 in The Queens Classic at Citi Field, where Lavelle scored a spectacular game-winning goal and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made nine saves to lead Gotham FC to a 1-0 victory in front of a New York City-record 42,175 fans.

The result extended Gotham FC’s unbeaten streak against Washington to five matches across all competitions and marked the club’s fifth consecutive shutout of the Spirit.

Following Saturday’s match, Gotham FC will play its final road match of the regular season Oct. 25 against the Orlando Pride, returning to the site of its dramatic 2025 NWSL semifinal victory that sent Gotham FC to the NWSL Championship. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET, with coverage on CBS Sports Network.
