Match Recap: Gotham FC Advances to Concacaf W Champions Cup Semifinals, Draws Tigres Femenil 4-4

HARRISON, NJ (Wednesday, October 16, 2024) - NJ/NY Gotham FC draws Tigres UANL Feminil in a 4-4 shootout that featured five goals in the first half between the teams. With the draw, Gotham FC advances to the semifinals of the tournament. 

Gotham FC struck first in the fourth minute. On a pass played from midfielder Delanie Sheehan to the top of the box, midfielder McCall Zerboni took one touch and chipped it above the goalkeeper’s head to score the first goal. 

In the sixth minute, Tigres Femenil equalized. Forward Stephany Mayer took advantage of a blocked shot and tipped the ball in on the rebound. 

Tigres Femenil took the lead in the fifteenth minute, forward Ana Dias took a shot to the far post that snuck in to take the 2-1 advantage. 

Esther tied the match for Gotham FC in the 21st minute. The forward had a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper and buried the ball in the nearside corner of the net to equalize. 

In a first half full of goals, Tigres Femenil scored again on a shot converted by Dias in the 25th minute. 

Gotham FC leveled again just before the half in the 42nd minute. After some combination play at the top of the eighteen, Sheehan found some space in the box and fired a shot past the goalkeeper to bring the score to 3-3.

The club continued to push forward before the end of the half. In the 45th minute, Stevens received the ball out on the right flank and switched the point of attack with a bending ball across the field to Esther. Esther took a touch and fired a shot, but it was saved. 

Tigres Femenil was awarded a penalty kick in the 57th minute, midfielder Jacqueline Ovalle stepped up for the kick and converted to make the score 4-3. 

The score leveled once again in the 70th minute. Midfieler Maitane took the ball off her chest touch and lofted a shot towards goal, the shot sailed just above the keepers hands and into the back of the net to bring the score 4-4. 

Neither team secured the winning goal, with the final score set at 4-4. In the draw, Gotham FC secured second place in the group stage of the Concacaf W Champions Cup and will advance to the semifinals match in May.  

Gotham FC will return to action Sunday, October 20 against the Orlando Pride at Red Bull Arena. Fans can catch the game at 5:00 p.m. EST (ESPN, ESPN+, ESPN Deportes).
