Gotham FC Hosts San Diego in Friday Night Top-of-the-Table Clash

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Aug. 6, 2026) - Gotham FC returns home Friday night for one of the biggest matches of the NWSL regular season, hosting San Diego Wave FC in a top-four showdown at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET, with Prime Video carrying the national broadcast.

Gotham FC (11-3-4, 37 points) enters the weekend atop the NWSL standings after earning a 1-0 road victory over the Houston Dash on Saturday night. Sam Kerr scored the decisive goal early in the second half while Shelby Hogan produced six saves to secure Gotham's league-leading 11th clean sheet of the season. The reigning NWSL champions closed a three-match road swing with an impressive seven of a possible nine points and extended its unbeaten streak to six matches (5-0-1).

San Diego (10-6-2, 32 points) arrives in New Jersey after defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 on Sunday at Audi Field. Rookie midfielder Lia Godfrey scored the game-winning goal in the second half as the Wave snapped Washington's three-match unbeaten run and extended their own road unbeaten streak to five matches. Goalkeeper Sandra Paños recorded her first NWSL clean sheet in the victory.

Friday's match marks the second meeting between the clubs this season after San Diego claimed a 2-0 victory at Snapdragon Stadium on July 4. Melanie Barcenas opened the scoring late in the first half before Trinity Byars added an insurance goal in the closing stages to secure the win for the Wave.

Gotham FC will look to avenge that defeat while improving on its 2-7-1 all-time record against the Wave across all competitions.

Following Friday's match, Gotham FC remains at Sports Illustrated Stadium for another Friday night contest, welcoming the Kansas City Current on Aug. 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, with Prime Video once again carrying the national broadcast.
