Gotham FC Visits North Carolina Aiming to Move Closer to NWSL Playoff Berth

CARY, N.C. (Sept. 18, 2026) - NWSL-leading Gotham FC travels to North Carolina this weekend for a matchup between the league’s top defense and top offense, with Gotham FC looking to move closer to clinching a fourth consecutive playoff appearance.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday at First Horizon Stadium, with ION carrying the national broadcast.

Gotham FC (14-4-6, 48 points) enters the weekend with a five-point lead in the NWSL Shield race following a 2-1 road victory over Racing Louisville FC on Friday. Guro Reiten scored her first career NWSL goal and Jaedyn Shaw netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season as Gotham FC completed the season sweep of Racing and claimed its seventh road win of the campaign.

The Courage (12-9-3, 39 points) enters the weekend in fifth place following a 2-1 loss at San Diego Wave FC on Saturday, its second defeat in three matches. North Carolina features the NWSL’s top-scoring attack, led by Ashley Sanchez, whose 19 goals this season are one shy of the NWSL single-season record.

The match will mark the 29th meeting between Gotham FC and North Carolina across all competitions, with Gotham FC holding a 9-13-6 record against the Courage.

The first meeting of the season saw a defensive battle at Sports Illustrated Stadium, with the sides playing to a scoreless draw in March. Gotham controlled much of the match but neither team was able to find a breakthrough as they combined for just four shots on target. Ann-Katrin Berger made three saves to preserve the clean sheet, including two late in the first half.

Following Saturday’s match, Gotham FC returns home to close out September against Chicago Stars FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET, with Prime Video carrying the national broadcast.

Key Points:

  • Gotham FC has lost just twice in its last 10 meetings with the North Carolina Courage across all NWSL competitions.
  • Since 2023, Gotham FC has been held scoreless by North Carolina just twice.
  • A team has held at least 70% possession in an NWSL match nine times since Opta began detailed analysis of the league in 2016, with Gotham FC accounting for three of those performances in its last 10 matches. Gotham has averaged 59.8% possession this season, trailing only North Carolina in 2023 (60.1%) for the highest mark over a full season during that span.
  • Midfielder Jaedyn Shaw scored the game-winning goal Friday against Racing Louisville FC, the 10th regular-season game-winner of her career. Shaw has four more game-winning goals than any other player in NWSL history before turning 22. Shaw was 21 years, 295 days old when she recorded her 10th regular-season game-winning goal, reaching the milestone nearly two years younger than any other player in NWSL history.
